Disabled parking victory
Date published: 04/11/2009
A father with three disabled children who all use wheelchairs has won a three-year battle for a dedicated parking space outside his home.
Dad-of-five Abdul Rashid (77) moved to Roundthorn Road, Oldham, four years ago after yellow lines in near-by Waterloo Street meant he could not park outside his own house.
At first he was able to park outside the front door of his new home, which is on busy road, near a bus stop and shops. But Oldham Council announced plans to install a zebra crossing, zig-zag lines, railings and bollards in front of his home.
Ward Councillor Aqeel Salamat helped Mr Rashid in his fight to get a disabled bay installed.
And he said: “I think it is one of the longest and hardest pieces of case work I have had to do.
“It has been very complicated, writing to officers, we have had site visits, been to see the council and spoken to highways officers.
“Originally, he would have had no access.
“The new scheme is not ideal, but I am glad to have helped.”
Mr Rashid’s sons Wajid (28) and Majid (35) and daughter Hinnah (20) live in the specially-adapted house and all three need wheelchairs.
Have Your Say
It shouldn't have been a three-year battle for such a good cause as this. Anyway, it's excellent news that the problem has now been addressed and good luck to Mr Rashid and his children.
I think they are very lucky to have won this fight as i am sure there are people all over this town in a similar position who have no chance at all of getting a disabled space.I once had the nerve to park outside my own house on the double yellow lines for 2 mins on a Sunday morning and you guessed it !! i got a ticket ,and my husband has a blue badge but silly me i had forgotten to put it in the window.
Have you ever tried to park on the yellow lines on Waterloo Street, its an absolute nightmare, cars parked everywhere no chance of a space.
Why does it take so long to get anyone at our council to see what the people of oldham need , this family have been struggling for 4 yrs to get what should have been an easy solution to there problem come on oldham get your finger out
Dedicated parking space? - a bit misleading, as anyone with a blue badge can park here, not just Mr Rashid.
Also, why has Mr Rashid's application been granted while others havn't? Has the Councillor pulled a few strings here?
Isn't it the job of a Councillor to "pull a few string" for his constiuents. Isn't that why he/she holds surgeries?
..and what about all the others who aren't white having had their applications rejected....should they also play the race card like Borg??? or have they never ever been rejected??

zebra crossing means nothing, look at roundthorn road, a disabled bay just in front of the crossing. Nearly knocked down two kids already
