Blaze rescue bobbies praised

TWO quick-thinking police officers have been hailed for their potentially life-saving actions after rescuing a couple from an arson attack.

PC Rowan Douglas and PC Simon Massey were commended by the head of Oldham Police for their alertness and bravery.

The bobbies were on patrol in Sholver at 4am on Saturday, October 31, when they spotted a fire at a house in Goya Rise.

The blaze was spreading quickly so they sprang into action — managing to alert the two occupants, who were upstairs asleep, before escorting them to safety.

Chief Supt Caroline Ball said: “If it wasn’t for the quick response of these two officers this incident could have resulted in tragic consequences.

“I am proud that they are part of the Oldham division.”

The modest heroes played down their actions, saying it’s all part of the job.

PC Douglas (30), from Stalybridge, said: “It’s one of those things. We were there and did what we felt we needed to do. Anyone else would have done the same.”

PC Massey (35), from Rochdale, added: “We’ve taken it in our stride. It’s what we signed up for. We are expected to do these things.”

The blaze started in a wheelie bin and materials stored outside and spread to the front door and porch.

The rescued couple said they were “absolutely shattered” by the attack but did not want to comment further.

PC Douglas added: “They were shocked and shaken.”

A police inquiry into the offence of arson to endanger life has been launched and is ongoing,

Residents have been warned to keep wheelie bins and combustible material away from the sides of their homes after a series of similar arson attacks.

Comments

People are quick to add comments in relation to a negative story about the police, however not so quick when the story shows the police in a good light!
I say well done, we need to support the average "Bobby on the Beat" all of the politics behind the scenes is nothing to do with them! (ps I am not a police officer if thats what you're thinking)

The article in the Chron, states that the two Police constables were on patrol, would that be foot patrol, or patrol in a police vehicle ?
