Oldham TV campaign to woo Christmas shoppers
Date published: 04 December 2009
THE benefits of Christmas shopping in Oldham will hit our TV screens tonight with an advert shown between two top soaps.
The 30-second advert will air for the first time in the break between “Emmerdale” and “Coronation Street” — a slot that will se seen by an estimated 930,000 North-West viewers.
Across the whole campaign period – a set of 17 adverts running until Saturday, December 12 — more than half of all adults within the Granada TV region will have seen the advertisement at least once and, on average, two to three times.
As part of the schedule, the adverts are also set to be shown in ITV’s daytime and weekend film slots, during family favourites such as “Peter Pan”, “Star Wars”, “Black Beauty” and “Scooby Doo”.
Jackie Stanton, deputy leader of Oldham Council, said: “This is our biggest-ever town centre shopping campaign and we’re using every medium available to publicise what is on offer in Oldham to boost local businesses and traders during the recession.
“The footage for this advertisement was filmed recently at the launch of our events campaign — the traditional reindeer parade — and we hope the happy scenes, plus the enticement of visiting our festive village, will help attract more shoppers into the town centre than ever before.”
The drive to attract shoppers has already been under way for several weeks with a series of events offering top-quality family entertainment in the town centre.

Come to see what? Our once famous market is no more and most of the shops have to let signs on them. I for one will be heading to Bury to do my christmas shopping a town with a bustling market and great shops. And don't get me started on how much the adverts will cost !!
Your having a laugh, who the hell want's to come to Oldham to do there Christmas shopping? Traffic wardens everywhere, no free parking, car crime some of the highest in Greater Manchester Oh I could go on and on. What a complete waste of money which surely could have been well spent elsewhere. Me I'm off to The Trafford Centre or Meadowhall where EVERYTHING is under one roof, FREE CAR PARKING sorry Oldham yet another own goal!
Nothing would persuade me to shop in Oldham, and I strongly object to my council tax/general taxation being spent on this sort of thing. I notice the cost has not been indicated.
wasting money again. theres no real shops in oldham no more.
huddersfield and manchester seem to be the only places any good for town/city shopping. that or the trafford centre.
but this is ombc's fault! (what a suprise!)
if it was free to park there it would attract more shoppers and in turn more shoppers would attract more shops.
its not rocket science!
Did not mention the red peril that are the Traffic Wardens I see. Out of towners going home with a £60 fine courtesy of oldham Council. That should pay for the Adverts.
What can I say -its all been said
Typical Oldham Council- haven't got a clue about anything
I have to agree with all the comments. There isnt even one decent independant dress shop.i live close to the centre and got a parking ticket at 9.50 one Sunday morning outside my own house whilst trying to load up.!!! they said i should left the boot up while the car was unatended! good way to have stuff stolen eh.????
'..seen by an estimated 930000 NW viewers.' Most of whom live within spitting distance of the town & know all about it's 'attractions.' Why would anyone bypass great shopping centres/markets to shop here? Why is our self delusional council convinced we are a 'Trafford Centre' on speed? Why don't they see the dreary actuality of the damage they have caused to our town through their inertia & lack of nous? Why are they wasting MORE of our cash? It should make 'Corrie' look very upmarket though.
Sorry Jackie, remind me just what is on offer in Oldham. No market of any real description. Public art pieces that don't work, a centre infested by civil enforcement officers.
How much this time Jackie? Have you usurped Howard's profligacy with public money?
How do you EVER expect Oldham's poor reputation to be redeemed without trying? Perhaps Marks & Spencers will see such ads & decide to set up shop in Oldham (c'mon, it's what we're all waiting for). I live in Ashton & prefer to shop in Oldham 'cos you have Debenhams & Primark (I am so classy!). None-the-less, I was in Oldham today & it was PACKED! Perhaps the ads have had some impact after all...
Have Your Say

And how much has this cost the ratepayers? This will benefit the spindles and other town centre shops most of which are national chains. How much cash will find its way back to the council?
With a massive debt to cover money seems to be spent freely on projections & advertising - why?
