Householders urged to join HomeWatch

Date published: 11 January 2010

OLDHAMERS are being encouraged to fight crime by joining HomeWatch.

It provides a valuable link between residents and the police, and members are encouraged to pass on information to police about suspicious incidents as well as circulate crime prevention advice.

Residents in Werneth are invited to the next HomeWatch meeting tomorrow (7pm) at Christ Church, Block Lane.

Details of other HomeWatch meetings can be found at gmp.police.uk/neighbourhoodpolicing or by contacting your local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Oldham West area inspector Alan Humphries said: “Residents can help us to beat burglars, bogus callers and other suspicious characters by getting involved in a local HomeWatch scheme.

“Through regular meetings, neighbours can share information with each other and the police. We can then respond to these concerns and work together with residents to make their neighbourhood a safer and more pleasant place to live.”

The HomeWatch scheme has been hailed as one the largest and most successful crime prevention initiatives across the force and has a proven track record in significantly reducing crime in local communities.

Some insurance companies can even offer cheaper premiums if residents are part of a HomeWatch scheme.

It would help if there was a regular visible Police Presence (especially around the Werneth/Freehold area). In the 10 years I lived there, I never saw the local Community Police Officer ever doing his rounds. When my Gran lived there 25 years ago, everyone knew the local Bobby (Eric) and there was never a hint of trouble or crime while he was on the beat.

VISIBLE POLICE PRESENCE! yes that is what is needed, not police in hot spots.

Homewatch sees somthing they report it, no police attendance - not deemed important!
