Police praise for council

Date published: 15/01/2010

POLICE are praising their good neighbour — Oldham Council — for helping them battle through the snow during the treacherous weather.

The Barn Street-based cops were helped by council staff across the road in West Street who loaned them six 4x4 First Response vehicles and their drivers.

The gesture helped officers to get to residents who would otherwise be impossible to reach.

Supt Stuart Goodwin said: “It has been great to see everyone in Oldham pulling together, and this is another example of this.

“Oldham’s community spirit has shone through during this challenging time and I would encourage residents to continue supporting each other.

“Take the time to look in on elderly and vulnerable neighbours to see if they have everything they need.”

If anyone has concerns for the safety of vulnerable people living in their communities they should contact their local Neighbourhood Policing Team:

Oldham council has at least 6 4x4 first response vehicles?! Thats at least £50k each with equipment x6 =£300k of tax payers money. What exactly do they do? Anyone know?

Timberwolf: they help the police by lending them their vehicles and drivers!Seems as we pay a hefty chunk of our council tax to the police, and pay the council for the provision of the First Response team, looks to me like we are paying twice for the one service! Why can't the council HIRE the team to the police?? They will have to get Miller's compo from somewhere!

no. i too have wondered what on earth these do? they're just like the traffic wombles that are on the motorways. they're of no real use.
they seem to have been created as the equivavelent to PCSO's but instead of replacing beat officers they replace traffic cops but have no actual work to do.

So, if we disposed of the first response wombles and the PCSO's in Oldham, how many beat officers could we put back on our streets? This is what we want and after all, we are paying so we should choose.

good question timberwolf. how much money could be saved scrapping these two useless services? which could be used to give us real police officers that can do something usefull.
i suggest the chron investigates this and does the public a favour highlighting this waste of their money!

Obviously the readers know nothing about the council first response team, and calling them wombles is a disgrace when they are highly trained and reactive 24/7 to community emergencies in Oldham, they are a category one responder the same as Police, Fire and Ambulance.

The work includes monitoring cctv, responding to alarms, calls for help from Oldham residents out of hours. We should be praising this team who provide value for money along with community reassurance and support – so your so misinformed it would be an idea for the Chronicle to spend some time with this team who are dedicated to keeping Oldham a safe place to live.

Owdhamer2001 says highly trained?? Are you kidding?? What training does it need to close a gate on Yorkshire Street and put a couple of signs up on Waterloo St each weekend?? massive waste of money on a service that effectively does very little. Firts Response to what?

Good point Oldhammer2001. I also don't know what the First response team do. If the Chronicle were to run a story each week about different parts of the council, they could dispels myths and/or expose waste. A win-win situattion for everybody.
