Tractors help to clear waste backlog
Date published: 18 January 2010
OLDHAM Council is using tractors (pictured) to help clear the backlog of waste in Saddleworth and Royton in the wake of the severe weather.
Some roads were inaccessible to the council’s fleet of waste trucks but staff and vehicles from the parks department have been seconded to help in the big clear-up.
Household waste and recycling centres at Arkwright Street in Chadderton and Beal Hey, Shaw, remain open every day between 8am and 6pm.
Collection points to dispose of accumulated bags of waste have been set up at: Denshaw Community Centre, Huddersfield Road; The junction of The Sound, Delph; Woolpack, Dobcross; Sam Road, Diggle; The Museum car park, Uppermill; Manchester Road, Greenfield (opposite the Clarence Hotel); Royton Precinct car park (skip near the toilet block).

Hannerton Road in Shaw has had its bins emptied but most of the streets running off it haven't. Now who said that Cllr Sykes lives on Hannerton Road?
Saddleworth and Royton.
What about Moorside??
Haven Lane was ridicoulous, and undriveable its also an access road to a school, but wasn't gritted. No rubbish has been collected in weeks.
Moaning about collections...aww what a shame.
Would you like to drive a HGV down a side street in the snow and ice....I THINK NOT!!!
Dont let them fool you-
I have just been to Royton Precinct car park.
There is no skip near the toilet block -or anywhere else for that matter.
OMBCworker - here's a radical idea, how about driving the HGV down a (gritted) main road (apparently all routes main routes in Oldham were "passable with care") and actually taking the bins to th waggon (and not the usual waggon to bin)!!!!!!!!!!
MAD4IT - you do have a point. But bear in mind the majority of side streets are on inclines. With the amount of snow and ice it wouldn't be easy or safe to drag a full wheelie bin up or down a street. It's was bad enough trying to walk on it. Imagine if one of the workers fell, time of work and possible claim. I havent had my bin emptied for 4 weeks but it will get done so no real hardship.
ombc worker,
Moaning about pushing wheelie bins on snow?
Whilst you may have a small point, be thankful you don't have to carry the bins down the path and to the wagon, then return the empties, with a smile on your face and a song in your heart, as the lads did in the 1970's... Winters were often as bad or worse than the last couple of winters we have seen!
Perhaps yor industry should accept that is what you are paid to do and devise a way to overcome the issues of weather?

No need of a tractor here, yet we've not had a rubbish collection since 23rd December, no glass recycling since 16th December and no paper collection since 9th December. Council website says we're all back to normal tomorrow!
