Support for jobless is vital: Woolas

Date published: 20/01/2010

THE number of people unemployed across the region in this recession is almost half the 1992 levels.

Unemployment in December, 1992, was 353,784 across the North-West compared with the current 195,741.

Labour’s North-West Regional Minister and Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Phil Woolas said it was vital to continue supporting people back into work during the economic downturn.

He said: “Every job lost in the North-West is a real tragedy for that person and their family.

“That is exactly why the Labour Government will continue to do everything we can to protect communities across the North-West from the recession, support people back into work and to get the economy growing again.

“During this difficult period, Labour is taking action to help people in the North-West back into work and supporting businesses and homeowners.

Direct assistance, such as the business tax deferral scheme and mortgage assistance and advice will help local people.

“While these figures suggest the measures Labour has taken are having an effect here in the North-West, there is absolutely no room for complacency.

“While the economy is fragile, it is crucial that we maintain support both for the local economy here in the North-West and nationally.

“To cut back on the fiscal stimulus, like the Tories are suggesting, would again be the wrong call at the wrong time.”

Mr Woolas’s comments come ahead of the latest unemployment figures which were being published today.

Would that include the 10 positions lost to local people and their families with the recent discovery of 10 illegal African immigrants working in Shaw Mr Woolas? Oh dear, thats your responsibility then isn't it?

Help the jobless yes!
but sorry phil! your beloved labour party have encouraged the lazy, bone-idle and irresponsible for the last decade with all the benefits help while they've been in power. whilst ignoring all the decent hard working people who now unfortunately need some help with unemployment.
now look at the mess we're in and the years of debt as well!
thats why you lot can never be allowed to mess things up any longer!

If Phil had done his job as the minister for immigration then unemployment would be down by at least a million.Or are we to believe that the ghettos of Oldham are full of badly needed doctors and engineers and scientists.

"Every job lost in the North-West is a real tragedy". The day Phil Useless loses his job as Oldham MP, will not be a tragedy.

Anyone who believes there are only 195,741 unemployed in the NW, needs to take a walk, on any weekday, around any town centre in the region. Who are all these people? Are they the idle rich? Are they tourists? In 1992 we did not have schemes to massage the figures. We have thousands of fit people claiming disability payments, thousands more NEETS. We have people on spurious job creation schemes all to get them off the unemployment figures. They won't tell us the true figures. They daren't.

Woolas’s comments come ahead of the latest unemployment figures which were being published today. They're that bad then!
"Lab is taking action to help people in the NW back into work & supporting businesses and homeowners." "Direct assistance, such as the business tax deferral scheme & mortgage assistance & advice will help local people." What action? Anyone seen any action around here apart from closures & redundancy? Jobs, Industry, Mfg. That's what we need not airy fairy talking shops!

Minimum 105 days to the election. It looks like we're going to have Woolyass & his bandwagon jumper pal Meac£er on alternate nights until then, trying to retain their positions at the trough. It's time this town had representatives willing to put some effort into improving our town & lives, instead of their bank balance.
