Woolas challenge to exes payback
Date published: 02 February 2010
PHIL Woolas has been named on a leaked document as one of 70 MPs that have challenged how much they have been ordered to repay from their expenses claims.
The Oldham East and Saddleworth MP has challenged the amount Sir Thomas Legg, the man brought in to review every claim following the furore last year, had recommended should be handed back.
All claims by every MP were scrutinised and Sir Thomas last year instructed about 200 MPs to return hundreds of thousands of pounds in “excessive” second home claims. When many MPs appealed, former appeal court judge Sir Paul Kennedy was appointed to examine their cases.
Full details will be published later this week about what money politicians will have to give back to the Commons, as well as any bids to have that amount reduced.
Mr Woolas said: “I will make a statement on Thursday. There is a technical argument to reconcile the figures and I have asked the fees office for information. I will, of course, pay back if asked but I do not expect to be.”
Last week Liberal Democrat Taunton MP Jeremy Browne was the first to reveal his appeal had been accepted by Sir Paul Kennedy, the former judge appointed to oversee the appeals process.

Another reluctant to remove his feet and snout from the trough.
13 weeks to go.............
And you know ALL the facts fedupoldhamer ?
The whole thing is one big scam. They are all in it for themselves. They are supposed to represent the public but those days are long gone. What we need is an MP who truly wants to do the job and not just make a comfortable living for themselves.
Pay it back now Phil while you still have a job.
Start clearing your desk phil, come the may election your out of a job.
What has useless phil actually done for his constituency since his election? Loads of people say he doesn't reply to letters or carry out what he's promised to do.
All I can see he's done is to aggrandise himself and move away from the heart of his patch to the village where Mick Treacy lives.
Well done Phil
we have to pay back when we have been overpaid items such as benefits ie council tax also income support also when we the public have been given to high a tax code .what is so different about mp"s apart from the fact that they are not sitting with 3jumpers on anda coat like the majority of our pensioners
ANother leaked Document! WOW if a person did that in a normal compant - they'll be fired so fast that their shadow will still be looking for them! Yet here it is the done thing!
Makes one really think as to what is atually going it Whitehall!
It's amazing how many people have such strong opinions on everything without knowing what has happened. Particularly 'fedupoldhamer'.
I bet that the printing ink on the paper is still not dry by the time that he or she is hitting the keyboard. We can be sure that s/he does not bother to read any article twice.
Its obvious Mr Woolas has a sweet tooth and likes his Chocolate but should he expect the taxpayer to pay for it . No way Phil , chocolate bars should be out of your own salary , Phil be a rebel and pay for it yourself ,
Creaming ever more cash off the state is his only talent. Everything else he has applied the 'Sadim' touch to has turned to ****. Look at the record, Immigration, Gurkhas, N.West. He's a laughing stock. There's a beauty of an item in his claim. £3,700 of tax-payers cash to employ accountants doing his tax returns so he can maximise the amounts he can rip off from the tax-payer.
Last 4 published years £416,000 salary: £594,000 'Expenses'
How much more does he need? Read bbwulfe.blogspot.com
i think its time for phill to move on! il let the people of oldham east decide!
no guffley i dont. but considering how long mr woolas has been in parliament and what he's actually done for oldham i dont think he has been value for money at all.
name me one good thing mr useless has done for oldham. or even the country?
they are many mp's from all three parties who have fiddled the system and took even more than what they deserved for the work they have done! people might not have been so offeneded by the expenses scadal if the country was doing ok!
what are all the facts then Alice?
i rememeber clothing, sweets and nappies all going through mr useless's expenses.
thats before all the other things he's put through.
then you got the biggie that i always use.
is he value for money? go on! answer me that one?
he only jumps on band wagons after they've almost been won. birks quarry is just one of them!
Fridays events might sharpen his interest in paying back. These might only be the first (hopefully) and he should watch out.
Have Your Say

just more proof of how cheeky him and fellow con artists (oh i mean mp's) have took the mickey and then even had the audacity to challenge it!
