Police name badges will cost £21,000

Date published: 09 February 2010

POLICE officers will wear name badges to make themselves more open and accountable to the public.

All of Greater Manchester Police force’s 8,100 officers and 4,000 civilian staff will wear the badges, which will display their full name along with their rank.

The cost of issuing all members of staff with the magnetic name badges will be £21,000.

Chief Constable Peter Fahy said: “By issuing police officers and staff with name badges we will simply be bringing GMP in line with the many other forces which already use them.

“It’s part of our commitment to customer service and will make us more open and accountable.”

Some officers have expressed concerns that the badges could be used inappropriately if stolen, as well as leaving staff members with unusual names open to ridicule.

Some officers have expressed concerns that ....staff members with unusual names (will be)open to ridicule.

Absolutely correct, I was at college with two lads whom went on to become police officers. PC Trotter and PC Bent I wonder where they are now.

Bad idea. Police officers with unusual second names could easily be targetted by unsavoury criminals seeking retribution. We used to have a Police Force which was then renamed "Service". Police officers need to have respect and not be treated as social services. Its one of the examples of a failing society.

Just a brass name plate with surnames on! simple and cheap!

lefthook: Trotter/Bent what about Trollop/Leach/Hook to list a few.................

Yet again more taxpayers money wasted on stupid ideas, but who is getting the kickbacks??????

These costs don,t add up for me approx 12000 name badges, cost £21000.
What are they made of?

Its a very bad and dangerous idea indeed! If some thug has a grievance he will make it his business to find out where officer Timothy Plod lives.
Police officers each have a number on their uniform, this should be sufficient if anyone genuinely needs to report them.
I have noticed that even in retail, name badges are not worn as much any more.
Name badges for police? I hope they will re-think this strategy and spend their money on catching criminals and keeping them in jail for a long time.

what a very good idea, Police officers should wear name badges, 12000 badges is quite cheap less than £2 a badge, i think it will improve the view of the officer,
