Signing up to good behaviour
Date published: 12 February 2010
PARENTS will be expected to sign up to behaviour policies when they apply for a school place under proposals to crack down on unruly pupils.
The changes would see parents asked to agree to the policy, along with attendance and uniform codes, as part of the application process.
Schools Minister Diana Johnson said the move would further reduce already falling levels of bad behaviour in the classroom.
Latest available figures show 2,110 Oldham pupils were given a fixed term exclusion — suspension — from school in 2007-8 and a further 90 expelled.
The measures will apply to applications for school places made from September, and will help parents recognise the importance of complying with a school’s policies once the child has been admitted, the Government says.
Ms Johnson said: “Standards of behaviour have improved over the last 10 years with the number of schools where behaviour is a significant concern at the lowest levels ever recorded.
“Pupils, parents and staff share the responsibility for making sure that bad behaviour does not disrupt learning.
“To do this parents need a clear understanding of their child’s school’s expectations of them and of their child.”

A return to the cane would be a better solution! Years of namby pamby liberal socialism has brough disatser to children who have learned that their actions have no consequence. These lessons well leared are carried through to adulthood where they are reinforced that hardly any action will result in consequences for the offender.
As you sow so shall ye reap.
What the hell!
Kids leave home and enter school, and we are still held responsible for their behavour? What a load of old crock!
Whilst in school and the misbehave, punish accordingly, cane, extra classes, additional "behavoural" close, drill etc....
Yes all have a responsiblity, so stop passing the buck! And deal with it!
Bring back the cane, bring in Cadets, and then Bring in Natioanl Service....
Parents not co-opertating,they can join in as well!
The two comments above are part of a different debate. This is about ensuring all parents make a supportive commitment to their children's education. Years ago, my father as a local head teacher used to say, "I want the children in four days a week and the parents in one" Making sure children grow up properly educated is a shared responsibility of parents and schools. A good move that should make things better.
JMTS: Properly Educated! WHAT.....
A lot cannot read a paragraph of five lines, write a sentence of five words, let alone type it!
Yes we need education to improve, kids need to be in school, parents do need to be more active with their kids and attend school function that they are involved in, attend Parents evening. etc! OOPS they cannot, most parents (both) are out working, just to make ends meet! To put food on the table, clothes on their backs and a roof over their heads, and cannot attend!
Have Your Say

In my day we use to get the cane, ruler or even the sole of a Dr Martin boot if we mis-behaved. BRING IT BACK. It did me a lot of good, I stayed out of trouble and now I work for the government in a good job. There's was no chance of committing any crimes as I was growing up.
