Shoppers from Bury have voted Debenhams and Primark Oldham’s top attractions as the towns are linked by a bus service for the first time in six years.
A survey carried out by bus operator First to mark its new 58 service between Oldham and Bury, found 60 per cent of people from Bury said they visit Oldham at least once a month And 56 per cent said Primark and Debenhams are the town’s most appealing attractions.
Other popular places that encourage Bury people to make the 12-mile journey include Oldham’s Tesco Extra supermarket, the Coliseum and Gallery Oldham.
Oldham people also voted the famous Bury market as their their top reasons for visiting Bury, with the East Lancashire Railway, the Met Café Bar and Theatre, and Marks and Spencer all proving popular.
In recognition of being voted one of Oldham’s top attractions, Primark store manager Craig Wood was presented with a certificate from First.
Craig said: “Primark is delighted to be voted one of Oldham’s top attractions and receive this certificate.
“We look forward to welcoming new customers from Bury who can now take advantage of the direct bus service.”
Linda Davies, marketing manager for First Manchester, said: “The results revealed that Oldham has its own unique attractions and is a popular destination for Bury visitors.
“We hope our new bus route will make it easier for people to travel between the two towns, as well as encouraging motorists to try the bus instead of driving.”
The 58 service runs between Rochdale, Oldham, Middleton and Bury and operates every half-hour, Monday to Saturday daytime.

Pensioners with free passes prodriver. Mostly going the out from Oldham. This route will be shut down when the new Trams arrive.
It alwasy mkes me laugh when i see the words eager shoppers linked with Oldham !!! :) if all we have going for us is a cheap shop like Primark and a Debenhams then things are looking dismal !!! We have no decent outdoor market or any up market clothes shops for the discerning ladies of the borough. The only places to shop for quality clothes are in St Annes Square in Manchester or the Trafford Centre.I suppose it is a nice ride out on the bus though if your just filling up your time.!!!
Linda Trafford centre will be shut very soon losing all its trade to Primark and Debenhams in Oldham, everybody will want to flock here now knowing this
Bury is a far better place to shop than Oldham. Cheaper parking, better market, Marks & Sparks, all the usual high street names & lots of good local businesses. You could swap the word Bury for Ashton, as well. Oldham is rubbish in comparison.
Ha Ha Ha......Oldham's top attractions, oh do stop, my sided hurt.
If the best that can be said about Oldham is that two trashy stores are its 'most appealing attractions' then that tells us everything we need to know!
I wonder if they had a business dinner in oldham of kebab and chips lol
Just read this aagain. Is that 60% of the population of Bury or 60% of those on the bus when it reached Oldham who got on at Bury, or 60% of those on the bus when it reached who were actually from Bury?
Either way, what a joke of a story for First to put out.
No disrespect to Primark - but if this is one of Oldham's best attractions I would hate to see the worst
well considering the shopping experience in bury i think they're just taking the mickey! bury is a much better place to shop. they take pride in the market and shopping facilities! they have an out of town cinema complex and they've just built another in the town centre! they also have cheap parking to attract people in!
oldham take a note of what they are doing! this is what you call progress!
Just how many people will travel the 12 miles to Oldham when the Debenhams and Primark currently being built in Bury open later this year. When they do open along with the new M&S all the traffic is likely to be in the other direction.
Have Your Say

Be interesting to see what length of time and, how many people were included in this survey. What were the passenger numbers making the journeys each way, was there a net inflow into Oldham? What has prompted First to do this?
Very dubious claims to make without supporting facts.
