Transport service meetings
Date published: 22/02/2010
ELDERLY or disabled residents affected by the axing of Oldham Council’s Integrated Transport Unit are being urged to attend three consultation sessions this week.
The department, which will close on March 31, is being cut to make £500,000 savings.
The jobs of seven drivers and two office staff are also under threat as part of the measure to streamline all services, as revealed in the Chronicle last week.
Around 400 people are currently transported from their homes to daycare centres across the borough.
Councillor Brian Lord, Cabinet member for adult services and health, said: “It was felt that there were far better ways to provide it and ensure that savings were made across the entire council budget.”
The meetings take place tomorrow at the Crompton Suite, Oldham Civic Centre, between 12.30 and 1.30pm; on Wednesday at Laurel Bank Daycare Centre, Shaw, 5.15pm-6.15pm and Thursday (5.15– 6.15pm) at Ena Hughes Centre, Failsworth.

I did of course mean Audi A8, not A6!! Why such lavish vehicles?
How are they going to get there without tranport?"Oldham In Control"is illegal!
Being one of a number of contractors who transport the elderly and disabled I would like to point out that what ever happens with the transport funding our service is not being withdrawn.
Obviously we are not in a position to cover the councils contribution but the excellent service our team has supplied for many years is still available to anyone who still requires it.Hopefully we can keep disruption to the service user to a minimum.

How much does the council spend on official vehicles? I parked on Tommyfield last week and noticed a very expensive, 59 registered Audi A6 with the Oldham coat of arms on a plaque in the front window. Mayors car I thought, over £55,000 to buy and very expensive to lease.
Whta's wrong with a stndard sallon car with a few extras for half the price?
