Hundreds celebrate prophet’s birthday
Reporter: BEATRIZ AYALA
Date online: 01 March 2010
HUNDREDS of people took to the streets of Oldham yesterday to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed.
Adults and children of all ages joined in the march which followed a circular route from the Waterloo Street Mosque, on to Union Street, King Street, Redwood Street and then back.
Banners were held, prayers were said and food distributed to the walkers as they followed the route.
Prophet Mohammed’s birthday was on Friday but the march was held on Sunday to allow as many people as possible to take part.
Celebrations started on Thursday as worshippers gathered to mark the birthday.
Nagina Mosque, Coppice, was decked in lights and packed with families for Thursday’s programme which included a talk by barrister Nurul-Aktab Siddiqui, principal of Hijaz College Islamic University in Coventry.

What was the involvement of the council in this event?
Only 100's???????
Hundreds celebrated but who will foot the bill for the police and the roads closing us council tax payers. It is our money this council is wasteing and if we asked for a parade for our pensioners or kids we would get it knocked back. Would be interesting to see if the BNP or the british league would get permission to do a parade in the town,
What would the asian community say then????
The people attending this March are Oldham residents and just wanted to celebrate this important event in their religious calender, in other words a good old knees up. I for one hope everyone who attended had a good time.
Brillaint comaprison Spud - If Muslims march why not BNP! Are you serious - This is comparable to a Chrsitian religious event, not the BNP, march has been happening annually for years, and we pay taxes as well despite the right whingers myth spreading.
If you want a march for kids or pensioners(?) ask, its nothing to do with us whether it gets approval or not, and we wont say anything, why would we?
If the BNP marches we will have a say after all its a "free country".
Have Your Say

Pity the organisers and Oldham coucil have no respect for the Church services that were taking part at the time.
