Signs target speeders

Date published: 03/03/2010

New flashing warning signs will be going up across Oldham’s roads to slow speeders or warn of dangers.

Work on installing the signs, costing £80,000, will begin later this month at sites suggested by councillors and neighbourhood managers.

The first block of vehicle-activated signs will warn of speed hazards in Buckstones Road, Shaw; Rochdale Road and Turf Lane, Royton; Roundthorn Road, Alt; and Westminster Road and Lord Lane in Failsworth.

Hazard warnings will go up in Mossley Road, Friezland; Oldham Road, Lydgate; Hollins Road, Plato Street, and Middleton Road, Oldham; and Rochdale Road, Shaw.

The signs are powered by wind and solar power, and are part of the council’s priority investment programme. Maintenance for the first five years is built into the costs.

Councillor Brian Lord said: “There are many roads that do not meet the criteria for major traffic-calming schemes but it is still felt by local citizens that there is still a need for some sort of additional warning.”

The flashing lights are really good. But in respect of Hollins Road it would be good up near the Co op if parking was controlled before someone dies

£80,000? I thought the council had no money. It doesn't matter if the signs are high tech or steel, people will still speed. The council should concentrate on bringing the pot hole filled roads up to scratch never mind forking out for new fancy signs that, if they're anything like the one placed on Huddersfield road, doesn't work either at night or when it's foggy, so what's the point? I bet the people who make these signs are laughing all the way to the bank with our tax payers money.

I just ignore them, some of them start flashing when my accurate satellite speed detector shows 27mph. Just more nanny state furniture to annoy motorists.

There is already a hazard warning sign on Middleton Road which has not been working for months. These signs do not slow people down the speed limit needs to be enforced properly by cameras or the police, not a visual sign which most motorist ignore. I am sure the money could be spent more wisely.

Yet another joke by a sick council, half the roads mentioned are so blocked you would be lucky to get 15mph, hey someone is making money out of it

I think that they should put up proper speed cameras because these things are just not working .If you are a law abiding driver then you wont get any fines for speeding and that is fact.I am constantly behind drivers who just couldnt care less about anything, they speed past these useless signs some of which are very close to schools etc. lets get real and stop wasting money.
