Accident leads to safety moves

Date published: 09/03/2010

NEW TRAFFIC calming measures could be introduced outside Failsworth School after a pupil was involved in a serious accident.

The Year 7 student ran out into Brierley Avenue during a snowball fight on February 10 and was in collision with a car.

He was taken to hospital with a broken leg in two places but is now recovering at home.

The specialist sports college is now working with Oldham Council to see if any improvements can be made to the road layout.

Staff have met representatives from the highways and engineering department at the Unity Partnership and Oldham Council to look at traffic claming measures.

Although discussions are at a very early stage, proposals could include moving bus stops and increased metal barriers.

A letter has been issued to parents asking them not to park directly in front of the school when taking pupils to and from school.

Parents have also been urged not park on the pavement outside the school building, and to speak to their children about road safety and using official crossing points.

Emma Fotherby, assistant business manager, said: “It was a terrible accident, but one which was not the driver’s fault as the student’s vision was not blocked.

“We are working with the council to look at various things including road markings and where crossings are.

“Because we feel we need to review the whole situation, we have issued a polite request to parents to talk to children about road safety and not to park outside or on pavements.”

I'm sorry but it's the lads own fault, running straight into the road during a snowball fight, has anybody considered how the poor driver must feel, it's bad enough driving in wintery conditions then you get the idiots throwing snowballs

yet again our useless council are way too quick to jump on the traffic calming bandwagon. this road is almost accident free. then a silly kid runs out in the road (their fault) and gets run over! duh! that could happen anywhere! no amount of traffic calming would solve this problem!
stop wasting our taxes on idiotic schemes like this and start actually providing decent roads first!
get you priorities in order ombc!

I'm afraid that it's central government who makes these rules and the civil serants who write the policy, as a result we get countrywide policy fit for central London.
It's a damning testament that even following this accident parents are still parking illegally, putting other peoples children at risk, this can be seen at many schools, there is some serious ticket dispensing needed to sort this.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with Flake, but I do. I travel past a school every morning which has 2 do not park notices with times stated on, and zigzag lines on the road and still parents/carers will insist on parking there to drop their children off. If I have pointed to the sign and politely suggested they are causing a problem I have normally been met with a mouthful of abuse...and I am polite to them- its not a case of yelling and shouting and swearing.

I'm now waiting or something similar to happen on Hollins Road/Ashton Road because the kids from Hathershaw do not know how to cross a road and just step/run out in front of moving cars. After having my window kicked by one I nearly ran over,I will not stop for them anymore!

Years and years have gone by without any problems on Brierley Avenue, but just because of one incident caused by a thoughless child, the area has to be looked at.

I actually drive along Brierley Avenue passed the school every morning and quite often have to stop because kids just cross the road infront of oncoming vehicles with the attitude of 'Well, they will have to stop if I am in the road.''

When I have then told the kids to move out of the way, all I get is foul language back at me.
