Police probe town centre assault
Date published: 15 March 2010
A YOUNG man is in a serious condition in hospital after a town centre brawl in the early hours of this morning.
Police were alerted to Yorkshire Street at 2.50am following reports of men fighting.
The 25-year-old was found by officers with face and head injuries and taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital by ambulance.
Part of the road, at the junction of Waterloo Street, was cordoned off this morning and a tent erected as officers preserved evidence. Police said inquiries were on-going.

My thoughts exactly is this area not policed as a given at weekends due to the high crime in this area? And where are the CCTV operators in the town or is that just to check you not overstayed on a parking meter? This is disgraceful someone's son, partner etc left for dead. How many more times thats a question to you Mr Fahy head of police.
Oldham in the regional news headlines yet again this morning. People do remember what they hear and see on the TV, despite the nonsence churned out by Oldham Council.
I wonder if the bars and clubs around where this incident happend will have their licences revoked like poor Winston Eastmond & Nicola Collins of Brownz Wine Bar did after an incident that occured near their bar, can't see it happening though.
the guy is one of my close mates he isnt in hospital he dead i hope the person who done it gets what they deserve...
How many more young people have to be injured or Killed in this Town before the Police do anything about it. Our son was injured after being hit from behind in the same area of Oldham town centre a few years ago, he ended up in hope hospital with a blood clot on his brain, thankfully he survived and the case did come to court not enough evidence as the cameras were not working!! I have heard this boy has died this morning after this latest assault.

sadly this has turned to a tragic incident as the young man passed away this morning. my thoughts and prayers are with his family.
another accident or inncident claiming the young life of another great oldhamer! rest in peace andy molloy xx
Sorry to hear what has happened and my sympathies go out to his family, however knowing the reputation of Oldham this incident was avoidable. I am the same age as this man, I like to go out and have a few drinks but I am selective where I go. I would not step foot in oldham at night for any reason as I value my life too much... IMO it is not worth the risk.
what a sad day R I P to a young man to young to die just what were the police doing, I always thought Oldham town centre was highly policed at weekends, when are they going to pull theirs finger out and do something how many more people have to die in oldham before the police act.My thought go to this young mans friends and family xx
REST IN PEACE YOU WILL BE SADLY MISSED XXXXX
RIP MOLLOY XXXXX
REST IN PEACE MOLLOY XXX
Rest In Peace Andy .. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the molloy family xxx
Sad to hear of a young man dying in such a senseless & needless manner. Oldham town centre on a weekend night is a place to avoid.
What a sad waste of a young life.
However, its no good blaming the police...even if they are not far away, they can't stop a punch before it happens...unfortunately some things kick off so quickly, you would need hindsight to stop it. With the best will in the world, police are only human.
its a disgrace that streets have to be cordoned off and traffic diverted, because of today's yob culture who can't handle booze.
people should be educated about alcohol use at a much younger age. drum it in!
RIP. Such a tragic loss of an innocent man.
Oldham continues to be a disgrace of a town that is not safe to go out in, the only thing guaranteed is there will be trouble every single weekend on Yorkshire Street.
"its no good blaming the police...even if they are not far away, they can't stop a punch before it happens By broady"
But it is the police to blame, everyone knows what Oldham is like at night, so there should be more police presence. If the police patrolled the streets move often their would be less chance of this happening...things like this happen because the police are nowhere to be seen.
rip andy xxxxx An innocent young man that is so liked by alot of people we will always remember you and can't believe we will never see that bubbly man again xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Another 'nasty incident' on what is (supposedly) a well-policed part of the town centre.
