More parking spaces

Date published: 15 June 2010

PLANS for more parking spaces in Oldham will see limited waiting times brought in at some long-stay car parks.

Oldham Council aims to introduce a maximum waiting period of either two or three hours at a range of district car parks.

The proposals would run between 8am and 6pm every day and would not affect evening use.

Councillor John McCann said: “Currently, all district car parks have a maximum stay of 18 hours.

“This effectively allows long-stay parking in all our car parks — even those that would seem to be for the use of short-term shoppers.

“Limiting the waiting times will increase the availability of spaces available in these car parks.”

Councillor McCann said there would still be a significant provision of long-stay car parks in parts of the borough where they are most needed.

He added: “I can state categorically that these proposals do not and will not involve charging residents and shoppers for either short-term or long-term parking.”

Following consultation and approval, the order could come into effect in the autumn. Full details can be examined at the civic centre between 8.40am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Any objections should be submitted by July 5.

Oldham is one big car park! Why anyone would want to shop in Oldham is completely beyond me. I remember the old Tommyfield market with colourful characters and vibrant stalls. Shops offering many various items for sale and a reputation to match, that seems such a long time ago now. Oldham has nothing to offer and that is why I shop in other parts of the northwest. Bury market, Bolton fish market but to name a few.

oh dear oh dear! they really do not get it oldhams councillors do they?
oldham has got plenty of parking! its one big carpark!

the problem is that parking in town in many places is still way too expensive! especially considering oldham has very little decent shops left.
they should be dropping the car parking prices way below other towns to attract businesses to the town. if its cheap for commutors to get to its an advantage!
make oldham attractive to businesses and they'll flock in.

just look at how many empty office premises are along union street and other areas! its a ghost town!
the loss of the trains didnt help. the metrolink will give a boost (although the town centre line wont actually help)
at a time when getting into odham is limited, reduce the cost and it might help!
at least try it and see!
make oldham a key businness district of greater manchester!
this has got to attract investment! its the only way it'll improve!

Good grief. There is absolutely no shortage of parking in Oldham of any variety. No one stays away from Oldham because there is nowhere to park.

This is simply about introducing parking charges further down the line.

Have council officers really got nothing better to do with their time?

at last common sense - i might now be able to do my shopping in the district centres by 1. continuing to get a free space and 2. actually increasing the chance of getting a space! Its impossible to get a space in places like Uppermill for example because residents park there all day!! I can now stop visiting Tescos and use local businesses!

My cousin has lived in various places in the UK over the years and now is overseas. He has, to be honest, seen few, if any places, with car park charges as high as those in Oldham.
Time for a change but for the better please Councillors.

In places like Uppermill residents park outside their own homes when they are home!! District car parks are rarely full, and certainly no one parks all day unless they are working nearby.

Give it time and you'll see ticket machines appearing.
