OLDHAMERS can give their old and unwanted furniture a new life by recycling it.

The newly-refurbished Household Waste Recycling Centre in Arkwright Street is now accepting furniture as part of a six-month pilot project.

The trial has been organised by Viridor Laing, the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority and local collection service Bulky Bob’s.

Every tonne of furniture re-used instead of going to landfill will prevent 2.7 tonnes of CO2 being emitted.

All donated furniture will be collected by Bulky Bob’s who will then pass it on to families on low incomes.

It is hoped the scheme will reduce the number of items going to landfill and helping less fortunate members of the community.

Councillor Neil Swannick, chairman of GMWDA said: “We are delighted to be delivering a reuse scheme in Oldham, which is an example of our commitment to increasing the rates of re-use, diverting waste from landfill and benefiting the community.”

Councillor Philomena Dillon, GMWDA member for Oldham said: “I am thrilled with this project, which will provide the local community in Oldham with access to affordable goods in quality condition, as well as giving a local charity the chance to carry out fantastic work. There is a strong commitment to reducing waste in Oldham and the project is evidence of excellent partnership working.”
