A MOTORIST has died following a crash in Frederick Street, Werneth.

His 54-year-old wife, a passenger in the vehicle had to be cut free from the wreckage and suffered a broken arm.

Witnesses said the Vauxhall Corsa was travelling from Chamber Road when it spun around, narrowly missing another car, and hit a lamp-post yesterday morning.

The woman was freed by fire-fighters from Oldham and Hollins, who were called out at 7.39am.

The 57-year-old driver was dragged clear by a passing taxi-driver and put into the recovery position before ambulances arrived.

Both were taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital for treatment, but the man later died. The identities of the two people in the car have not been released.

Ten-year-old Joshua Kerr, who was at his grandmother’s house in Frederick Street at the time of the crash, captured the events on film.

The youngster, from St John’s Junior School, in Failsworth, said: “I heard a scream and then the sound of a vehicle suspension banging down.

“I looked out of the window and saw the car spin round and hit the lamp-post.

“Two fire engines and about five police cars came to help. I felt sorry for the people who crashed.”

Frederick Street was closed for an hour.
