Travellers move

Date published: 22 July 2010

Travellers who were camped on land at Higginshaw Road, Oldham, moved last night, but not very far.

The dozen caravans are now parked 100 yards away across the main road.

Why dont the police check the vehicles for tax and insurance and when they find they dont have either of them take the vehicles and sell them for cleaning up the mess they will leave behind.

Phats....I agree with you, I said more or less the same a couple of days ago. I'm guessing the reason why they don't have vehicles removed is access by the travellers to money-grabbing, no scruples "no win - no fee" solicitors who will get the vehicles back with a bit of compensation on top.

If they confiscated their veehicles, wouldn't it be more difficult to move them out of the Borough (which is what most people want).

The obvious answer is that if they are moved on, then other than going to an official site they should be ordered out of the Borough andwith the caveat that they are not allowed to re-enter it fr a minimum of 28 days.

If they won't use the official sites (which we pay for and they don't) then we have no option other than to deal with them immediately and severely.

I remember when the travelling community had their own camp site on Ada St, Gldwick. It cost the taxpayers of Oldham £100,000 and at the time was state of the art facilities, the green Mosque is now built in its place.

If the police take their vehicles off the travellers, how on eartha re they expected to tow their caravans to move out of the area?

To McLovin and Straight Talker.....nobody has said remove all the vehicles, just sufficient to pay the clean up costs. But, please, give us your solution!!!
