Metrolink clearance work starts
Date published: 09 August 2010
CLEARANCE work at Oldham Mumps roundabout is due to begin today in preparation for the town’s new Metrolink line.
Construction work is well under way on the line from Manchester Victoria to Rochdale via Oldham.
Trams are expected to begin running to Oldham Mumps in autumn 2011, and to Rochdale in spring 2012.
As part of the proposals, the tram will run at ground level through Oldham Mumps roundabout with the viaduct set to be demolished in late summer. Final details of the schedule are being discussed with Oldham Council and will be announced in due course.
In advance of this, Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive’s contractor will be carrying out some preparatory work from today for around three weeks.
This will involve vegetation clearance at Oldham Mumps roundabout and work to prepare the ground for the equipment needed for the demolition.
There will also be some preparatory works on the viaduct.
To find out more about the work, call the Metrolink public liaison team on 0161-244 1555 (open during office hours) or email future.metrolink@gmpte.gov.uk

Is this major traffic chaos being caused so when Metrolink is finally finished, through the town centre, the 'nornal' traffic chaos will seem like bliss in comparison?
Or is it just another way to waste more money?
I can see the 'planning' meeting now. How can we waste more time and money and really mess up the traffic?
I know let knock down a perfectly usable route across Mumps roundabout.
Then spend cash making a temporary route through Mumps roundabout to cause as much traffic aggro as possible.
Then clear most of the new route across the roundabout out of the way to divert the tram track into the town centre.
Just make sure you dig up Manchester Road roudabout at the same time and you've cracked!
Does anyone know why they aren't using the viaduct ? Do *they* know ? I wonder what the people of Oldham have done to deserve this road chaos that will disrupt traffic for years to come. Nightmare !!
What's the betting that many will reroute via Park Road and make that much busier ?
4 major routes meet at mumps roundabout consisting of ten lanes of busy traffic at most times during the day.
most of the time these lanes flow reasonably well with no problems.
the pedestrian and rail routes are separate.
the new design at this junction will now have all three merging together.
there is not another example of this on the whole metrolink network where such a large juction has all threeforms of traffic colliding.
this will not work and will cause massive jams.
how much is all this going to cost?
who actually wants the link? well by my reconing, Ive not spoke to one person who was or indeed is in favour of it!
the Super Tram set up in Sheffield is the biggest white Elephant in Yorkshire, running at a massive loss, not used by many, and adding to traffic chaos accross its routes.... the train, was adequate before, this is going to be another Millenium Dome!!!!!!!
Why is anyone surprised? This hasn't come out of the blue. The restructuring of the traffic at Mumps has been part of the plan ever since Metrolink was first conceived for Oldham 20 odd years ago.
JTMS, the restructuring of mumps is only a relatively new idea based on ideas back when the congestion charge con was being thought up.
before that the original designs of the metrolink incorporated either a one way section through the town from manchester or a new bridge joining onto the existing mumps viaduct!
I think it is crazy to demolish Mumps Bridge: not only is it of interest in itself but it would be an ideal way of taking the trams across the roads.
Renovated - at small cost - it could continue to serve Oldham well, and it has been the gateway for the eastern approach to Oldham for over a century.
No one wants this Tram system, and them in Droylesden dont either, Has anyone looked at the congestion its going to cause to travellers in cars, what if the motorway shuts, again the car driver is going to be conveinienced again, as some of us have to travel distance to get to destinations, and Oldham does not know how destroying it will be to shopping, as I for one wont be using the town,as Bolton,Bury,Wigan and Ashton have a better shopping centre than this town will ever have.
Have Your Say

do not remove the bridges! to introduce yet another two types of traffic to mumps junction (tram and pedestrian) will just create a massive traffic jam nightmare!
who are these so called experts making these decisions? because they seem to know nowt!
