Westminster streets ahead with £50,000

Date published: 17 August 2010

Oldham MP Phil Woolas swopped the corridors of Westminster for Westminster Street, Oldham, when he dropped in on a successful community project.

A neglected area of Derker will get new landscaping, seating and paths after local people won a Lottery grant.

The Derker Wardens, a group of community-minded local volunteers, have secured almost £50,000 from Community Spaces — a Big Lottery grant administered by Groundwork UK and used to help communities brighten up neglected areas.

Angela Cosgrove, secretary of Derker Wardens, said: “The land is at Westminster Street and Stoneleigh Street. “It has gone to rack and ruin and local people have told us they would like landscaping, new benches and tarmac paths.”

Work should start on the site by the end of August, with a formal opening in the autumn.

I'm quite surprised that HMR haven't allowed somebody to put in planning permission.
I also have an apology to make to 'wiseowl'. Sorry but I missed your reply to my comment on an article dated 22/07/2010, but you were a week late..!!! Let me point out to you that according to a RICS surveyor,(which I assume you are not)my home is perfectly sound with no cracks or bulges. Once again I will re-iterate, both yourself and 'realist' need to engage your brain before putting fingers on keys.

It's been an eyesore for years. Hope it looks good when finished and not vandalised under cover of the night.

C.Ayre,I did not refer to your home in this way and I am sure HMR are perfectly aware of your views on them.Westminster Street will look better for this, let us hope the mindless few of the few remaining in the area do not see fit to leave their mark.Well done to Angela Cosgrove and her team for doing something about getting funding for our blighted area,I hope Mr.Woolas was inspired enough by your efforts to himself ask about funding at the other Westminster!

Well done. If some determined volunteers can get £ 50,000, I ownder why Woollas can't get a grant of a few million to get the Town Hall done up. Odd that !

So Derker wardens secure £50K from the lottery & useless Phil thinks he can in some way visit and then release the story to press and word it in a way that looks like he was involved in someone elses success?

Typical! When's that court case being heard?

so wiseowl you didn't actually write this then....C.Ayre,is your cpo property the one with the bulging frontage with cracks? This has not been looked after yet the owner is holding out???.
MMMMMM....I'm 'holding out' as you put it because it's the home I chose to buy in the place I chose to live.
