The introduction of A* (as was done with GCSE) only serves to dumb down the value of other grades - which have been with us since examinations began (in terms of O Level, GCSE, AS and A Level). It was a way of saying 'Hey, too many getting A grades, we'll have to raise the boundaries'. So, for example any student getting over, say, 70% or more would get an A - but now it may be, depending on subjects, still an A but an A* would be anything over 80%. It would be easier to show the actual mark.

I agree. Often wondered why they (Exam Boards)don't just give the actual mark achieved by a candidate because that way anyone who just wants to base success on an actual mark can do so. After all an A Grade can be anything from (for example) 70% to 100%.
