Blindness no bar to success

Date published: 26 August 2010

GCSE:

OLDHAMER Richard Howarth has never let his blindness get in the way of his ambition.

And the 16-year-old was delighted to achieve seven GCSEs at Stockport Grammar School — five of them A* and A grades.

He said: “I feel just fine — It’s nice to get my results at last, and they’re good results.”

Richard is well known among classmates for embracing every aspect of school life with both hands.

He appeared in the school production of “Les Miserables”, played the flute in the school orchestra and performed as a tenor vocal soloist in “Dido” and “Aeneas”.

Away from his musical participation, Richard is a keen golfer and he received the L.S. Goddard Memorial Prize for Service and Contribution to School Life this year.

He also recently gained outstanding results in his European Computer Driving Licence and will now go on to study Media Production and ICT at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford.
