Dog control plan leads to campaign
Date published: 08 September 2010
THE Kennel Club is campaigning against dog control orders being proposed for Oldham, saying they may harm the health of animals.
Oldham Council is consulting on the orders which would exclude the animals from children’s play areas, make it compulsory for dogs to be on leads in seven parks and restrict owners to exercising no more than four dogs at once.
The Kennel Club, which represents breeders and owners, has set up a campaign, KC Dog, to help responsible dog owners protect their rights where councils are making the orders.
Caroline Kisko, the Kennel Club’s communications director, said: “Dog control orders are becoming more common as councils attempt to find ways to control dog fouling and rein in irresponsible owners.
“Unfortunately, this often means responsible dog owners are also penalised and have to suffer restrictions.
“KC Dog aims to alert people to dog control order consultations and thereby ensure the fairest outcome for all.
“The Kennel Club is concerned that the ‘dogs on leads’ order put forward by Oldham Council may adversely affect the health of Oldham’s dogs by limiting the areas available for essential off-lead exercise.
“Furthermore, the proposal to impose an upper limit of four dogs to one dog walker contravenes Defra guidelines which recommend six.
“We are therefore urging the council to consider positive alternatives to dog control orders, empowering dog walkers to act responsibly without the threat of restrictions.”
The council consultation closes on September 27.

Once again the Kennel Club is wrong, spending over £9 millon on several campaigns regarding the wefare of dogs. I own and show two dogs, when out they are never off their leads, twice a day walks and they are fit (and me too)their weight is kept right, they dont need to run about for exercise.
What is to be done about irresponsible cat owners ?
Cats are allowed to excrete in every public place and they have a much greater potential to carry dangerous disease .
Are the council trying to protect us , or are they reacting to one single news story without the correct research or advise ?
Is there such a thing as a responsible dog owner? Certainly not amongst the kennel club which has taken breeding to such a level dogs are becomming deformed and can suffer greatly. Funny but I don't recall the kennel club commenting about any youngsters when their sight has been irreparably damaged by toxicara.
Clearly this irresponsibly and selfish group are only concerned with what they want and everyone else can go hang. The should not be given any credance when policy is made.
jwithers,as a responsible owner of 2 dogs it upsets me just as much that children contact health problems after touching dog faeces. However I do get fed up of being an easy target and wonder if those who challenge dog owners would do the same to drunken yobs, after all the same children can only contact the HIV virus, possibly leading to full blown aids from contacting bodily fluids like urine, faeces and vomit.
Responsible dog owners don't have an issue with exclusion zones (childrens play areas) the problem is we are seeing draconian restrictions attached to WHOLE sites including open spaces. Access to nearby areas where dogs can be let off lead for play, exercise and running is paramount to a dogs wellbeing and health. As for the deluded person who never lets their 'show' dogs off lead. Shame on you! Control orders are red herrings and evade dealing properly with the issues.
Have Your Say

How sadly pathetic are the Kennel Club, what is the problem with banning dogs from childens play areas? Considering there have been health problems with kids touching dog muck and numerous recent attacks by dogs.. They really are above themselves.
