Only 107 days to go to Christmas Day!

Reporter: Richard Hooton
Date online: 09 September 2010

CHRISTMAS has come even earlier to Oldham this year - with one store setting out decorations a full 107 days before Christmas Day.

Housing Units launched its 2010 Christmas department today insisting that starting celebrations in September will help both the consumer and the economy.

The department is 3,500 sq feet of floor-space dedicated to Christmas trees, decorations and accessories and seven ready-made decoration themes.

It may seem too early for Oldhamers still hoping for a last blast of sunshine after this year’s washout summer.

But Housing Units director Nick Fox said: “Christmas is getting bigger and bigger as a celebration in the UK, with many families turning the decoration of the house into an event in its own right.

“By starting Christmas so early we feel we’re helping both the consumer and the economy.

“Customers like the idea of being able to spread the cost of purchase of decorations — and UK families are very much following the North American trend of making Christmas a much bigger and more decorative event in any case — so they’re actually spending more on what they really want, and spreading the cost.”

Dress it up anyway you want it, Nick Fox, it's still about 80 days too early!

This has nothing do with helping the customer or the economy. There's plenty of time for people to plan buying Christmas items. It's not as if it comes as a surprise, is it?

Oh dear!! Its Halloween first then Bonfire Night as well as dark nights.........Silly man.

Along with 'back to school' promotions depressing kids before they have even broken up for the summer hols, it should be against the law to publicise or promote Christmas until the last week in November. WE ARE BARELY OUT OF THE FIRST WEEK IN SEPTEMBER!!! Madness.

Thanks for the warning, thats one shop I'll be avoiding for a couple of months.

I thought it was too early a week or two ago when DJ Chris Evans started prattling on about Christmas on the radio.

I have a relative with a birthday in early November. If I walk into a card shop playing Christmas Carol I turn around and walk out again. When I find a shop not playing carols at the end of September / early November I buy the birthday card I need.

What time do the Easter Eggs arrive? October?

105 days to go.

Theres nothing wrong with a bit of fun.

The problem is starting the Christmas shopathon in your face advertising etc so early.

By time Christams arrives you are sick of hearing about it, thus, the "magic" or "fun" can be spoiled or damped.

I don't mind the decorations or the carols, but can't we wait until November?

The comments by Nick Fox are a farce, this is simply nothing more than a greedy money making exercise at the expense of unsuspecting families who turn up to Housing Units.
I take it that they are going to be selling Easter eggs next month.
As a result I certainly won't be shopping there until December.

I love Christmas but what makes it special is its annually for 4 weeks long ish. Any more then people will be bored. If my kids saw that now i've got 2 hyper kids waiting 100 ish days......NIGHTMARE ho ho ho
