A CHADDERTON man has been jailed after pleading guilty to a hit-and-run accident that killed a 40-year-old man.

Jacob Davies, of Holly Grove, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years after he admitted causing death by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to report a collision.

The 20-year-old was also disqualified from driving for five years at Manchester Crown Court.

At 9.45pm on Saturday, May 29, Andrew Ellis and another 40-year-old man were walking across Broadway in Chadderton at its junction with Hollinwood Avenue.

As they crossed the Oldham-bound carriageway of Broadway, they were hit by a Land-Rover Freelander.

Mr Ellis suffered extensive injuries and died later that day.

The second victim was knocked on to a footpath. He suffered serious injuries to his pelvis and leg that were considered life-threatening at the time. He still suffers from the effects of those injuries.

The Land-Rover was abandoned at the scene.

Two others were sentenced in connection with the collision at earlier hearings.

Lewis Howell (20), of Coalshaw Green Road, Chadderton, pleaded guilty to permitting the use of a motor vehicle with no insurance and using a vehicle with no insurance. He was fined £600 and banned from driving for six months.

Amy Richardson (26), of Crowlees Road, Mirfield, West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to permitting the use of a vehicle with no insurance. She was fined £270 and her licence was endorsed with six penalty points.

PC Jon Gorton, of Greater Manchester Police’s Road-Policing Unit, said: “Andrew Ellis was simply trying to cross a road when he was tragically killed and his friend was seriously injured.

“This incident highlights the terrible consequences of what can happen when people drive dangerously.”
