Historic building ‘safe and secure’

AN historic Victorian railway warehouse which has lain empty for decades is “safe and secure”, according to Oldham Council.

Brick and wood work on the distinctive, curved Park Road building is showing signs of buckling.

Questions have been raised over the future of the Grade II listed building — which would possibly need millions of pounds to make it usable.

The decaying, council-owned building was put on the market for £1 eight years ago because its derelict condition meant it was effectively worthless.

Councillor Dave Hibbert, Cabinet member for housing, transport and regeneration, said: “Oldham Council is aware of the concerns and issues regarding Park Road warehouse and has procedures in place to ensure the site is safe and secure.

“We have also recently carried out a structural survey of the building and council officers are in contact with English Heritage.

“The building is inspected regularly so that any new issues that arise can be identified and remedied to ensure site safety at all times.”

There has been no shortage of plans for the warehouse, built in 1876, but like the building, those saw a buckling trend.

The building was earmarked for housing, a shopping complex and much more, but since 2008 and when proposed plans for a revamped retail park, interest has gone quiet.
