Fears over building forces road closure

New twist in saga of warehouse
CONCERNS over the stability of an historic Oldham building are understood to have caused a near-by road to be closed.

Just days after Oldham Council stated the building was “safe and secure”, it is understood Park Road has been closed as a precautionary measure due to the dangerous state of the Park Road railway warehouse.

Built in 1876, the building has stood derelict for decades.

Now worries over the decaying building have forced drivers into last-minute U-turns.

Barriers have been installed on Park Road close to the junction with Kings Road, preventing motorists from travelling towards Glodwick and Abbeyhills Road.

Traffic can still travel along Park Road towards Oldham town centre. Signs say the road is closed but official diversions are not in place.

Motorists are being forced to turn around and head back to the town centre to find alternative routes.

The towering curved warehouse follows the line of the former railway line out of Oldham and due to its derelict condition has been deemed effectively worthless. Having purchased it in the 1980s, the council put the building on the market for just £1 in 2003. Since then several plans for the listed building have hit the buffers.
