Free shuttle bus is a winner with the public

Oldham Council has moved to quell complaints about the isolation of the new Metrolink station at Mumps by launching a free shuttle bus.

And on its maiden service yesterday, commuters found it just the job.

Commuter Joyce Coupe got a nice surprise when she stepped off the tram from Chadderton.

Instead of having a long, wet walk to the town centre, she found herself hopping on the shuttle bus for a stress-free, dry journey into work.

“This is the first I knew about it,” said Joyce. “It’s great — it saved me a long walk in the rain. I’ll be getting off at the bus station and I’ll definitely use it again.”

Friends Sylvia Statham and Sheila Salt, both from Oldham, were more than happy with the service after jumping on at Oldham bus station on their shopping trip into Manchester.

“I think it’s great,” said Sylvia. I wouldn’t have gone into Manchester otherwise, especially not when it’s raining, because of the trek to the tram stop.”

Her friend Sheila added: “It’s quite daunting crossing the roads to Mumps, especially if you’ve got children with you. I read about the service in the Chronicle and we thought we’d try it out. It’s brilliant.”
