Date published: 07 September 2012

OLDHAM’S MPs claimed more than £460,000 in expenses in just over a year, it has been revealed.

New figures from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), set up after the expenses scandal, detail MPs’ claims from April 2011 to the end of May, 2012.

The figures show Oldham West and Royton MP Michael Meacher submitted claims of £163,860.80, Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams £151,287.90 and Ashton MP David Heyes, whose constituency includes Failsworth, £152,000.

The majority of the money is for staffing costs: £123,000 for Mr Meacher; £93,211 for Mrs Abrahams and £108,000 for Mr Heyes.

Thousands of pounds worth of bills were also submitted for running constituency offices. The remainder is claimed for London rents and travel to and from the constituency.
