Controversial homes plan debate

Date published: 07 January 2013

A planning application to build two houses on a much-loved green area in Saddleworth will be discussed by the parish council tonight.

The First Choice Homes proposal has angered Diggle residents, who say the site, in Huddersfield Road, is a community space that needs protection.

FCHO agreed to listen to residents and held a public meeting.

Despite continuing protests from residents, FCHO’s application claims the need for affordable housing in the area outweighs local concerns.

A spokesman said: “FCHO owns the site. In this case, having weighed the need with the comments from residents, we still feel the right thing to proceed.”

Saddleworth Parish Council will discuss the plan tonight (Uppermill Civic Hall 7.30pm), before passing the final decisioin to Oldham Council’s planning committee.

I have lived in Diggle a good number of years and I have never seen any children play on this piece of land and I only see it used once a year for the Xmas Tree lighting. FCHO were always going to ignore local redidents concerns. Do I want the houses, of course not (I am a NIMBY !), but residents don't have a strong claim to stop it happening unfortunately !!

Done deal then? what a surprise!

First they complain of not having enough affordable housing in the area, then when they get the chance they moan. I have to ask do they ever do anything else in Saddleworth but moan about everything?

I played on this field on a child as did many others at the time and since??????

whats the betting there to buy not to rent.we need homes to rent in the borough

250,000 people moving to GB every year, got to live somewhere Half Full. Hutch up !

i also played on this land as a child. it is a much used space. even though it is rather small in size.

interestingly. from what i can gather from residents i know who live there. those that chose to buy their houses from the council got the portion of land opposite their house also.

one of those houses is in private ownership so this potion of land is technically smaller than they think.

private developers should not escape their original affordable housing quota's they promised.

Oldham Scotland, it won't be the people of Saddleworth who will benefit from these houses it will be families from rough estates from Oldham which will bring the area down, Saddleworth is big enough to form its own town we don't need Oldham Uppermill is our town centre, why don't we distance ourselves from that place before it drags us down with the rest of them, we need our independence.

'rough estates from Oldham which will bring down the area' oh please, come down from your tower.
