A five-storey building can be built on the Oldham College campus, Oldham planners have agreed.
Plans to begin work on the state-of-the-art building, which will provide IT rooms, a job shop, community room and informal teaching spaces were approved by councillors who welcomed improvements to Oldham education services.
Shelagh McNerney, representing the college, said: “We currently have a lot of problems on the site.
“We now have the opportunity to keep students here as an active part of the town centre, with an excellent set of buildings.”
Building work is ready to start in early February, she explained
College principal Alun Francis said: “This ambitious investment, which is largely funded from our own resources, is part of a genuine commitment to raising standards and improving opportunities.”
Construction should be completed by early 2014

Can we believe anything we read in the papers.
Only yesterday the Chronicle carried a story saying that the college was looking to axe 50 members of staff to save money and balance budgets. Now we are told they have money to build a five story building. Alaun Francis needs to get his act together.
