Tax rise to offset Government cuts

Date published: 21 January 2013

OLDHAMERS could face a council tax rise to boost the police service coffers following heavy Government cuts.

Greater Manchester’s Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd is proposing to increase the police element of the council tax by £5 per year for average B and D group households.

This would bring the annual cost for this element of council tax to £149.33 per year — £2.87 a week — and is one of the lowest police precepts in the country.

Mr Lloyd said: “Greater Manchester Police has already made considerable savings as it strives to meet the £134 million hole in its budget by 2015, resulting in almost 1,000 fewer police staff posts and the loss of 1,138 police officers from our streets.

“I now face tough decisions in the face of disproportionate cuts, combined with the uncertainty of what future Government budget decisions will mean for the communities of Greater Manchester.”

The proposed budget for 2013-14, which includes savings of around £12.5 million, will help build on neighbourhood policing across Greater Manchester. It will also improve joint working with local authorities, the NHS and other public partners to address drug and alcohol problems and mental-health issues.”

I would not begrudge a rise in my council tax if it meant I could actually see bobbies on the beat and better still have them respond to criminal acts!

If Police officers weren't allowed to retire with pension pots worth around £1 million we might be a nation able to afford better policing.
GMP remains completely inefficient and badly run, rather than the usual Labour stunt of throwing other peoples money at the problem why aren't proper efficiency measures being put in place?

@flake. What's with this "other people's money"? Part of that is my money and I reckon it works out at just over 10p a week increase. Sounds like value for money if it's going to offset the damage to the Police that's come from the Government's cut to its funding.

All political parties are a joke, which makes you wonder why they get into politics themselves, if it was not for themselves!.

Where was this bombshell in Mr Lloyds manifesto? The answer is absolutely nowhere. In 2 months another Labour politician pushing for another tax rise. Throwing money at the problem will not put police on the beat, rather it will defer the spending reductions to the police for 12-18 months. £2.87 may not seem a lot to Mr Lloyd but that is the cost of some of the basics such as a pint of milk and loaf of bread.

A Labour Commissioner was elected(even though he doesn't believe in such posts) and surprise surprise he wants more money!Take a pay cut Tony and then we might agree.Labour never changes.

It's Tory and Lib Dem policy to have chosen to cut the police budget.
I suggest people contact Mr Cameron and Clegg if they are unhappy with the cuts in the police budget. Unless of course people have a strange view that the police should work for nothing.

molly is this the same gmp that have just paid 2.5 million to move headquarters..the same gmp that hired the reebok stadium at a cost of £30,000...under any of the 3 main parties it will always be the same just b4 labour lost the last election they were slashing police jobs left right & centre now in the modern age you cannot just tell it as you want people to think ...google is a large large world....
