Dear lord why would you have that much money in the house? At 69 you would have thought they would have more sense as its not exactly old is it? surely they understand how to use a bank?
My elderly mother is 82 and she even has telephone banking etc and has far more sense than that!
I feel it is time to give up trying to tell elderly people about large amounts of money at home,it doesn't seem to get through.
Its really quite simple to me. After working all their lifes many pensioners who have saved money and made provisions for their retirement find they are targetted by the council and are entitled to no financial assistance owing to them having life savings. Those that never worked or never saved any money are then given everything for free. How can that be fair? Save all your life and then have the council take it from you. A radical rethink is required.
My Mum is only in her 60s but isn't used to dealing with the bank much, my Dad did that before he died. Every time she calls the telephone banking, they try to sell her something, get her to invest in something, you name it - I work in financial services, have told her to tell them that and that I deal with her affairs, but I can imagine so many people falling foul of this. So maybe you can see why people may not want their money with the bank - but this is just so sad...
Timberwolf and Jocrad have it dead on correct. I hate banks, always trying to sell insurance or new credit cards. Also My Gran saved all here life and the home she eventually went in was paid by the sale of her house while others who had nothing got it free. Old people do hide cash and its possibliy wrong in these times but not in the good old days of trust and honesty.
A lot of older people dont use banks for the simple reason they dont want a paper chain i.e. if claiming benefits etc paying for carehome. I know of an elderly couple who when they died their family found large amounts of cash all over the house maybe around this sum or more.
At this time, don't believe everything you read.

Wow that has to be a new record for stupidity! And I thought £7K was bad!
No doubt we'll be told that expecting OAPs to put their money in the bank is akin to reducing them to poverty 'sackcloth & ashes?' But they are a much more attractive target than any other community member, who know that keeping large amounts is a very bad idea!
