Man dies in snow horror

Reporter: Erin Heywood
Date online: 05 February 2013

A MAN died this morning as snow caused more chaos across Oldham.

The victim died in hospital after being trapped under an overturned lorry near junction 20 at Chadderton on the M60 at around 6.10am.

All three lanes of the motorway were shut anti-clockwise between Hollinwood and Heaton Park. They were reopened at around 8am. Police have released no further details.

Commuters faced a gruelling journey to work: Oldham’s Metrolink services were temporarily suspended, and several local bus routes were diverted or missed entire sections of their routes.

Thirty-nine flights in and out of Manchester Airport were hit while the runways were cleared of snow.

Junction 20 of the M62 at Rochdale was down to one lane for most of the rush-hour due to a breakdown on the roundabout.

The A635 Holmfirth Road was shut due to the heavy snowfall, as were the Woodhead and the Snake passes

Chronicle weatherman Damian Rodgers was quick to assure readers the snow won’t last: “It will turn to rain; there won’t be much more snow. That should be it for snow for the rest of the week.”

25/01/13 Snow - Metrolink services to Shaw & Oldham suspended due to "points failure". Use you expensive Metrolink ticket on buses that stop running 20 minutes after Metrolink fails.

05/02/13 Snow - Metrolink services to Shaw & Oldham suspended due to "points failure". Services start running but are "severly delayed".

Are we having this winter weather because Metrolink can't
"Bring the Sunshine" to Oldham?

Looks like we are out of luck with the sunshine today. Lets hope its not snowing tomorrow, we wouldn't want another "points failure", or all day disruption again.

05/02/2013 21:10 Severe delays between Shaw & Crompton and St Werburghs Road

We are currently experiencing severe delays between Shaw and Crompton and St Werburgh's Road.

We are also experiencing slight delays on all other lines.

Metrolink apologise for any inconvenience caused.

why was the metrolink suspended ??? Do the trams in Stockholm Sweden stop running in winter ??????

and so! just as predicted! the cold weather oldham always suffers in winter stop services on the new tram line.

yet the old aincient train service we where told was "past it" hardly ever struggled in such cold snaps.

progress eh! who needs it. oldham didnt!

Its not s "sunny" start to todays Metrolink service to Shaw & Oldham.

Some passengers travelling between St Werburgh's Road and Shaw and Crompton may experience a delay to their journey this morning

Metrolink sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused this morning

A man has died and all any one seems to be bothered about is chucking muck at the flippin metrolink. My thoughts are with his family.

It is unfortunate that someone did die. There is nothing I can say or do that will bring that person back.

The article covers 3 topics & I commented on the part that we can do something about. It maybe 'chucking muck' in your opinion, but the local politician have been throwing their spin & our money at Metrolink.

How many lives could be saved by spending the money from Metrolink elsewhere is difficult to say, but the 40 million still needed to get the signalling to work could have done a lot.

I am annoyed by the spin put on Metrolink & the vast cost spent on it. If you are worried about peoples lives on the roads would this money have been better spent else where.

A couple examples of better spend - Keeping the Lollypop crossing staff employed. Changing the zebra crossing on Milnrow road to a pelican. I'm sure many people in Oldham can think of safety improvements they'd like on our roads, but the council spent the money on a blind alley instead.

I managed to travel from Saddleworth to Shaw that day & back in my car & the Metrolink was cancelled which proves cars are more reliable than public transport.
