Get help now to reduce impact of cuts

Date published: 12 February 2013

THE thousands of Oldhamers about to be caught up in the benefits shake-up are being urged to get one step ahead by looking for help now.

Councillor Abdul Jabbar said the local authority’s strategy to tackle benefit cuts to thousands of working-age claimants is to reach out and prepare people.

Oldham Council’s campaign “Make The Most Of Your Money” is a way of supporting those affected.

Local housing providers have been visiting homes to talk about the changes coming into effect this year.

Councillor Jabbar said the council is in a “race against time” with claimants hit by a “triple whammy” of changes to council tax benefit, bedroom tax and benefit capping.

He said: “It’s been a case of how can we help people manage their finances better and how can we generate their income from other schemes.

The council is also recommending people without bank accounts use Credit Unions.

i think its cheeky that the councils campaign is called
“make the most of your money”

it should be called

"make the most of other peoples money"

all that is being reformed is the benefits system.
not peoples wages they earn from doing a hard days work!

Couldnt have put it better--fedupoldhamer.

'How we can generate their income from other means' ?? How about they try & generate their own income??

Cllr Jabbar seems to be somewhat out of touch on this one.

do you not understand that many working people are getting help through family tax credits fedupoldhamer? Perhaps it's time pensioners were included in these cuts, after all we're all supposed to be in this together.
I wonder if you'd be so enthusiastic then?

Believe it or not @fedupoldhamer but not everyone on benefits is a scrounged stealing off the state. There are many unemployed, disabled etc people who are legitimately claiming benefits who will be in a terrible position once these reforms kick in.

@ brambe and flake. five years ago before the reccession started to surface there where far too many people already claiming benefits who could have worked.

they chose not to. they had been living the life of riley and effectively stealing off every single working tax payer.

before the reccession there where jobs for everyone. but many chose not to do them in favour of receiving benefits.

these people have spoilt it for those who have now been made redundant or needed help.

the benefits system should and only be there as a short term solution.
it should only be avaliable for a minimum of 12 months and only if you have already paid into the system in tax for at least 2 years.

too many either jump straight on having never done a days work in their lives.

never claimed any benefits!
worked all of my working life.
furthered my education to better myself.
haven't started a family yet until i am financially stable enough to do so.

when i do i will pay for it myself

@fedupoldhamer, @effteeuk, @ProDriver – how the compassion and understanding flows from your mouths. Tell me, if you had a son or daughter forced to live on benefits, would your language be quite so intolerant in its tone.

@Shaun mcgrath, I have all the compassion and understanding in the world for rock solid genuine claimants but nothing but contempt for those who want to use benefits as a life long income and like the line in "song sung blue" everybody knows one.....at least.

@shaun mcgrath --If my son and daughter had to rely on benefits it would not bother me in the slightest, becauseI know that they have been hard working kids and paid into the system just like me.

for the totally useless and lazy I propose work camps and for the old maybe work houses or at least some place out of sight so as not to waste the Tory voters money and clog up the council housing. After all this is a world for only those that are usefull to society.Brave new world.

@shaun mcgrath. no one is forced to live on benefits. dont try that old one.
labour tried it for 13 years of their term and only the few (like yourself) where fooled!
you obviously dont understand compassion then if you think people should live like that.

i will ensure that my kids will have the best oppotunity to educate themselves and get a decent job (and that does not necessarily mean university) and pay their way in society so if when they do have to rely on benefits they've put in.

@fedupoldhamer some people do have to live off benefits e.g. the disabled or those unemployed seeking work. It's a very one sided view you have. I agree that the welfare state is in need of mass reform but you can't abuse every single person who uses it. I hope you never require job seekers allowance or suffer a disabling injury
@ernie I'm sure there was a young Austrian in the 1930s who had the same ideas as you.......

the uk has one of the best employment rights, facilities and equality for the disabled. so dont try that one! i work with several people who are technically unfit to work.

the difference is they have respect for themselves and still go out to earn a living. unlike some. no all i might add. there are some unfortunate to be able to do so.

but all those that could work or choose not to work basically are theiving off every single working tax payer and all those that really do need long term help!
