Bird’s eye view of Metrolink
Date published: 04 March 2013
CHRONICLE photographer Chris Sunderland got a bird’s eye view of the ongoing Metrolink works when he took to the sky with his camera.
Chris won the hour-long flight on the light aircraft in a raffle at the Jubilee Colliery open day so he decided to mix business and pleasure and capture the progressing construction project.
He captured the ever-changing Manchester Road roundabout as engineers complete the extension of the current line to take tram travel through the town centre by 2014.
Fellow Chronicle photographer Tony Miller paid a visit to the new tram stop in Middleton Road.
After reaching Manchester Road roundabout from the new King Street stop, the tram will head down Featherstall Road before reconnecting with the current line at Freehold.
Last week, the line was extended to allow trams to reach Milnrow and Rochdale from Oldham.
Comments
Surely the last paragraph should have read: 'Last week, the line was extended to allow trams to reach Oldham from Milnrow and Rochdale.'
It's good that the tram enables people to access jobs across the GM conurbation, but we should all, including the local press, be pulling together in order to make our town a destination.
the only destination in oldham is the metro station to get out of oldham
What a carbunkle!....Just an accident waiting to happen!
A bird's eye view of the future. A tram track with no trams moving on it. Get use to it Oldhamers as Metrolink has had to suspend services again today & put you on buses due to another points failure.
Thursday - Delays & complete shut down of service.
Friday - Delays, followed by severe dalays.
Saturday - Delays.
Sunday - Was OK!
Monday - Delays & suspendion of service.
Would our "transport expert" like to comment on how much better & more reliable the trams are compared to the former train
At the end of the day, the success of Metrolink or otherwise, once the Union St section is completed, will be whether or not it carries more passengers than the rail line did. I'm prepared to wait and see.
@Ex Rail Traveller. you've more chance f winning the lottery than getting a straight answer out of him!
Last Sunday I saw two youngsters walking down the line in Dunwood Park. Access all too easy now in two places, watched one just walk through the fence near the "duck feeding platform". Another accident waiting to happen?
JMTS. If Metrolinks passenger numbers are greater then the train service it is not a case for Metrolink being better.
Passenger numbers are increasing on all rail services nationally, mainly due to road congestion. Any increase in passenger number may have happened whether it was train or tram.
You have no comparison to make in Oldham. Maybe compare passenger number from Rochdale to Manchester, where people still have a choice?
Today Metrolink has operated "a service" to Oldham & Rochdale. This was after delays caused by a tram failing in Manchester.
The delays were then compounded by "anti-social" behaviour on a tram.
The tram failed mid afternoon and Metrolink still cannot provide a 12 minute service to Oldham & Rochdale at nearly 9pm.
i do love JMTS's comment on this subject!
"success will be whether or not it carries more passengers than the rail line did"
hahaha! brilliant!
we said it would carry more passengers due to its higher frequency. but we did say that the old train service would have done just the same if the frequency had been increased.
sad thing is that the tram is already carring more and more passengers. but all it has done is provide a more frequent way to go to better places.
oldham as a town looses out!
Metrolink was shut down from Oldham to Rochdale on Saturady afternoon. They managed to run all day Sunday, but the frost seems to have stopped the Trams again for the Monday morning commute.
Commuter can get the bus instead & be late for work. They would tell you which bus to catch but the public address system has also broken down today.
Metrolink, not bring sunshine to Oldham or Rochdale again. Any word yet from our "transport expert" as to why this more reliable service is less reliable?
Have Your Say

ah yes! the manchester street roundabout. of of the greatest engineering disasters thats just waiting to happen.
yet another legacy of the useless liberal council who couldnt gaurantee the tunnel that was meant to be built underneath.
yet another cost cutting exercise at the expense of the motorist and the safety of motorists.
lets see how long before the first accidents occur here.
just like at mumps.
road and rail do not mix and should be kept well apart.
