End of an era for college
Date published: 12 March 2013
OLDHAM College’s six-storey tower block is to be demolished.
Work will start on the Walton Tower in May as part of the redevelopment of the Rochdale Road campus.
The building will be replaced with 28 specially-commissioned temporary classrooms, each equipped with a smartboard and IT facilities.
College bosses say the temporary buildings will be better than the current classrooms in the 1960s-built tower.
They will remain for 14 months until two new buildings are completed.
Construction has already started on the first, a £7m building with modern classrooms and a new main entrance.
Work is also due to start on a £9m science, engineering and digital technology building.
Oldham College principal Alun Francis said: “Every decision we make is with the emphasis on our students and the improvements to the learning experience we aim to provide.

Aw no! Ah the memories to now be gone.
A smartboard? Whoopee doo!!
Long overdue replacement of an unfit building reminiscent of the St Peter's Precinct era.
Good news for future college students but Flake has a point.
More than 60% of current council spending each month goes directly on school building projects, minibus hire for schools, nursery services, agency teaching staff, youth services. On top of this is a large percentage of other shared areas like the Unity Partnership also goes to child & youth services. I hope all the whingers who currently moan about lollipop crossing staff realise those of us who pay but are not obsessed with population expansion get nothing in return for our Oldham contributions

Why do todays buildings last such a short time? 50 years is nothing for a building! Our government sit in a building built in 1837 and I doubt there are any plans to move out & demolish it!
The fact is that building to the cheapest possible spec means the lifespan of these structures will always be limited, and no doubt many of us will live to see the demise of this structure even though it hasn't been built yet!
