Restored war memorial set to be revealed

OLDHAM’S war memorial will go back on open display this week after a major project to restore it.
The Grade II Listed monument has undergone extensive work with the help of £30,000 grant from the War Memorials Trust. This week the scaffolding over the memorial will be removed so the next phase of refurbishment, restoration of the bronze doors on either side of the pedestal, can begin.
The memorial will be looking its best for this year’s Remembrance Day service in November and next year’s events to mark the centenary of outbreak of the Great War.
In 2011 the council, as custodians of the 16 war memorials across the borough, pledged £50,000 to carry out works to make them safer and more accessible to the public.
