MURDER detectives are trying to unravel the mystery of the death of a Failsworth dad whose body was found at Saddleworth’s Dovestone reservoir.

Police gathered reporters at the reservoir yesterday to appeal for information on Craig Wilcox’s death, which is now being treated as murder.

Det Insp Terry Crompton, of the major incident team wouldn’t say if Craig’s body had injuries when he was discovered on February 24. He had last been seen on January 6.

Det Insp Crompton said Craig had no history that would suggest suicide; recent information suggested murder.

A post-mortem examination proved inconclusive.

He said: “At this stage the reasons for his death are uncertain. We recently heard he was in trouble with some lads and we believe people will have information relating to that. We are working to establish his last movements.

“We are struggling to understand what happened between his going missing and us finding his body but at this stage we believe Craig was murdered.”

Det Insp Crompton added: “Craig didn’t tell people what the story was and who these people were. He kept things quite vague among the people who knew.”

Det Insp Crompton is also keen to source information on a missing Vans blue canvas trainer.

He said: “That shoe is potentially very important. This is a popular walking area and we would urge anybody who saw anything suspicious since the day Craig went missing to contact us.”
