Date published: 13 June 2014
A 93-YEAR-OLD Fitton Hill woman was conned by a thief who claimed to be checking her water supply.
She let the caller into her home on Tuesday afternoon and went to the kitchen. After turning on the taps he told her to stay there and left the room.
A few minutes later he shouted for her to turn off the taps and left. She later found her bedroom had been ransacked - though nothing is believed to have been stolen.
The would-be thief was dark-skinned, in his twenties and around 5ft 6in-5ft 8in tall, with smart, black hair. He was wearing a navy or dark-coloured tracksuit with lettering on the chest.
Det Con Kate Dawson said: “It doesn’t look like anything was taken but it is clear the man had used the excuse of checking the water to get into this vulnerable woman’s house.
“Always ask for identification for someone claiming to be from a company - and if youare unsure, ask them to call back when you can have a friend or family with you.”
Anyone with information should call police on 0161-856 9063 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555 111.
