A DRUNK who hit a 61-year old man over the head with a beer bottle has been jailed for eight months.
Adam Preston (23) was drinking with friends in Shaw for four hours before the incident last September.
Manchester Crown Court was told his Asian victim - hit without warning or provocation - suffered excruciating pain and had to be taken to hospital for stitches and has since suffered stress-related symptoms.
Jailing Preston for eight months, Judge Jeffrey Lewis told him: “You have expressed remorse and recognised that what you did was quite unacceptable, but this offence was so serious that immediate custody cannot be avoided”.
The court heard that Preston, of Durden Mews, Shaw, was drunk after drinking vodka and wine.
Preston, who pleaded guilty to assault, first claimed to have been acting in self-defence but later admitted there had been no provocation.
