A NAIL-BITING finale saw East Oldham crowned champions at the 10th annual Oldham Borough Games.

It came down to the last result of the day for them to take title for the first time, pipping West Oldham by only one point.

Around 400 Year Five and Six pupils from 30 different primary schools made up the 42 teams who represented six districts on Saturday. The competition took place over five hours at Failsworth School.

Spectators included Oldham Olympian Dorothy Shirley-Emerson, who won high jump silver in the 1960 Games in Rome.

Harriet Richards and Sophie Unsworth, members of the Great Britain under 18s handball team, were among 50 young volunteers helped to run the event and referee the competitions.

Many of them have been taking part in the sports leaders Level 1 course during the year which helps to improve their skills in coaching, refereeing and sports leadership.

Local sports clubs and volunteers also assisted.

Sport development officer Neil Bennett organised the games and said: “It went really well. The competition was good and close making it very exciting.”
