Date published: 26 June 2014

Crossword puzzles and keeping active might be the key to a long and healthy life.

And Bertha Taylor should know: she celebrates her 103rd birthday today.

Bertha is having a party at her home, Charles Morris House in Failsworth, with friends,a dn is expecting a special visit from the Mayor and Mayoress.

The home’s Lynn Linekar said: “She’s a lovely lady who is very affectionate, friendly and independent. She’s loved by all the other residents.”

Born in 1911, Bertha - who likes to be called Bert - was raised in the Ordnance Arms, Glodwick and went on to become a landlady in several local pubs, at first with her husband Leonard.

She worked in the drink and catering industries from a young age, and spent her later working years at Brian Mill in Shaw.

Bertha was very active until six months ago, when she had a fall left her with limited mobility.
