Fines get messy for fly-tippers

Date published: 18 July 2014

FLY-TIPPERS could soon face harsher penalties under new sentencing laws, the council has warned.

The maximum fine for dumping rubbish increased to £3million for companies and £95,000 for individuals earlier this month.

Even low-level offending could now attract fines of up to £10,000 with culprits serving up to three years in jail.

The warning comes after the council successfully prosecuted two more Oldhamers for the offence under old sentencing laws.

Fozia Javid (31), of Brompton Street, Glodwick, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping on nearby Chief Street. She was fined £340 with £760.75 costs and a victim surcharge of £34.

Guy Bongongo, of Seventh Avenue, Limehurst, pleaded guilty after household waste was found dumped on a car park in Limehurst.

The bench felt the offence was too serious for a fine and sentenced him to 60 hours’ unpaid work with £646.87 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

If you see anyone fly tipping or dumping rubbish report them on 0161-770 6644 or submit a report online at www.oldham.gov.uk.
