A SADDLEWORTH village is to play host to a unique new “living museum” at the weekend.

The Pennine 1940s Military Weekend is the newest military vehicle and re-enactment show to visit the area with a series of exciting events.

And one of the dedicated organisers promised: “There will be no candy-floss parades or a Hollywood-style massive sell — the event is entirely free.

“It will be two days of history mixed with fun and will give visitors and military enthusiasts a chance to be part of a very important series of events.”

The military weekend will be staged on Saturday and Sunday and focus on St Chads Church, in Church Lane, Uppermill.

The venues, linked by a picturesque hamlet, will include the Church Inn and nearby Cross Keys and cater for First and Second World War enthusiasts and post-war military re-enactors.

Organisers say Swastika armbands and flags are not permitted.

A spokesman said: “We want this to be a responsible, family event that will help give a real insight what life and times were like during the 1940s. But in reality, the weekend will involve history from 1914 to present day.

“Oldham and Saddleworth has got significant military and civilian attachments.

“We expect a big turn out of military vehicles and would encourage anyone who can throw any light on these important events to come and share their stories and experiences.”

The event runs from 11am-11.30 pm on Saturday and noon-4pm on Sunday.
