Oldham so sweet on cake sale for Syria

Date published: 25 July 2014

OLDHAM is the icing on the cake when it comes to helping war-stricken families.

The borough has beaten towns and cities such as Rochdale, Leeds, Burnley, Sheffield and Bristol — not to mention the entirety of Wales and Scotland — in a charity cake sale to raise money to help Syria.

Oldham organisers of the nationwide Ramadan fund-raising effort Cakes4Syria have so far sold 353 fudge cakes, generating £1,765 for the Islamic Relief charity fund. Volunteer Moynul Hannan (26) says he is finding it a bit of challenge making all the mouth-watering deliveries during the fasting period but he’s putting a positive spin on it.

“It’s important during Ramadan to keep active and continue as normal, so driving around delivering is a positive action,” he said.

The scheme was launched in Bradford, last year, and has gone nationwide this year as the UK’s Muslims are becoming increasingly concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria.

Cakes4Syria has already delivered over 10,000 sweet treats across the UK, raising over £50,000 and with Ramadan due to end on Sunday or Monday, they’re pledging to ship out a lot more.

Famous bakers so far include broadcaster Jon Snow, boxer Amir Khan and political journalist and author Mehdi Hasan.

Cakes, priced £10, can be ordered at any time by calling the Cakes4Syria call centre on 01274-952 144.
