A cafe owner has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award for building a booming trade despite his father suffering from a life-threatening illness.
Lynton Bryan (29) opened L’s Kitchen, the Link Centre Cafe, four years ago with his father, Leonard, and was soon packed out every lunchtime.
In May things changed for Lynton when he discovered his dad had been diagnosed with cancer. But while some might have struggled to come to terms with the situation, Mr Bryan continued to grow the business and is delighted that his hard work has been recognised.
He said: “I’m surprised but happy that somebody has noticed what I’ve done because I do my best for my customers. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and this has made my day.
“Business is going really well now and I’ve just taken on a new member of staff to help me out.
“Without my dad I wouldn’t be standing here now. I think I would have hit rock bottom a long time ago if it wasn’t for him. He’s still my motivation.”
Mr Bryan was nominated by Daniel Francis, a regular customer at the Union Street cafe.
He said: “He’s a brilliant guy who has always got time for people. He goes out of his way to do anything he can and is just an amazing person.
“I think he deserves some recognition. I don’t know how I would cope with my dad having that kind of illness and trying to carry on as normal. But he never moans and always has a smile on his face and is still friendly. People like him are few and far between.”
