It wasn’t long before romance blossomed, and the pair became a couple, but June’s mother was adamant her daughter would celebrate her 21st birthday at home before she was allowed to get married.

The couple courted for four years and tied the knot at St Paul’s Church, Ashton Road.

June was a hairdresser and Sidney a toolmaker. He worked for William Bodden and Sons in Coldhurst Street, Oldham, and later trained in glass processing, which opened up his horizons on the job front.

Sidney was a “Glodwick lad” and June was born in King Street, Oldham. They have two sons, Lee, who used to run Triangles hair salon in Lydgate while June ran the Uppermill branch, and Lee.
